What to see in MALTA. When to visit Malta. The best of the island

Thanks to its Mediterranean climate, Malta is an excellent destination not only for summer, but all year round.
In the less touristic months, you will discover its historical and artistic heritage and its wonderful glimpses, away from the summer crowds.

Located in the Mediterranean Sea’s stretch between Sicily and North Africa, the Maltese archipelago is composed by Malta (the main island), Gozo and Comino, its two younger sisters.
Despite its small size, the archipelago has such a wealth of traditions influenced by the alternation of the European, North African and Middle Eastern culture over the centuries, so that acute visitors will remain fascinated.
There are so many interesting aspects, from villages to people, kitchen, and then the archaeological sites, landscapes and the capital.

VALLETTA MALTA Places of interest

Our Malta itinerary begins from its capital, Valletta.
Walk along the Valletta‘s main street – Republic Street – up to the fort overlooking the sea, observing the buildings facades and the typical colored wooden balconies.

Take a break at St John’s Co-cathedral, noting how the sober façade is opposed to a rich baroque interior, and walk in to see the two paintings by Caravaggio.
When you arrive at Queen Square, take a break at the historic Caffe Cordina.

Then head to the Upper Barakka gardens and enjoy the magnificent view of the harbor and the “Three cities”, Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua.
These three small contiguous centers were the first house of the famous Knights of mortar.
Walk along their alleys, the steep staircases and the promenade.
Then, from the port, take the typical boats and enjoy the nice Grand Harbor Cruise.

And finally do not miss the new City Gate, designed by Renzo Piano, which includes the new entrance to the city, the outdoor theater and the Parliament.

MALTA. visiting MDINA and RABAT

In addition to Valletta there is another capital, the ancient Mdina, also called “the silent city”.
Entirely built in tuff, Mdina is enclosed within ancient defensive walls.
Getting lost in its narrow streets offers beautiful sensations.

Not far away is Rabat, a small town hosting the catacombs and the St Paul’s cave, who was shipwrecked here.
From this side of the island, do not miss the Dingli Cliffs, high cliffs from which to admire the vastness of the sea and beautiful sunsets.

Another not to be missed place in Malta is the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, in the South of the island.
Go for a fresh fish lunch in one in the many little restaurants, take a stroll on the promenade and make some photos to the numerous “luzzi” moored in the port.
What the luzzi are? The typical Malta fishermen’s boats, with their lively colors and the Osiris eyes paintings at the bow, as amulets.

Now that you have an idea of what to see in Malta, also plan a visit to the two little islands of Gozo and Comino.

the best of the island of GOZO

Gozo has a rural inside land.
The heart of the island is the town of Rabat, rich in local crafts and small restaurants.
In dominant position there is the fortified citadel, built in medieval times to protect from pirates and Saracens attacks.

Until a short time ago, the symbol of Gozo was the Azure Windows, a natural arch dug in the rock by the sea, which made the coast particularly striking.
The Azure Window recently collapsed due to a storm, but its impressive shape will remain in the heart of travellers who have been able to admire it.

COMINO and the BLU lagoon

Comino, bare and almost uninhabited, is exclusively to visit because of its sea.
In particular it is worth to spend a few hours at the Blue Lagoon, a turquoise water canal rating among the most beautiful Mediterranean corners.

Malta will amaze thanks to its different souls, maritime and rural at the same time, with a present that is the product of influences received and suffered over the centuries.
A fascinating island, where you can visit some of the oldest megalithic temples in the world, as well as the most contemporary buildings.
